A Certified Nursing Assistant or CNA is a part-time or full-time nurses’ assistant who works in a hospital, a nursing home, or even at a patient’s home, providing health care and medical assistance. CNAs are also called patient care technicians, orderlies or home health aides.
As the percentage of elderly in the population rises, the demand for qualified personnel in the healthcare system goes up proportionally. CNAs are therefore in high demand, and the requirement is only bound to increase in the coming years.
How to Get a CNA Certification
For people hoping to gain an entry into the medical profession, CNA is a good place to start. It does not require extensive training to obtain a CNA certification. After working as a CNA, one can graduate on to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a Registered Nurse (RN). In order to obtain CNA certification, one must undergo CNA training. The person should have a high school diploma or a GED (General Equivalency Diploma) to enroll in the CNA training program.
How long does it take to get a CNA Certification
One of the questions that aspiring CNAs ask is “how long does it take to get a CNA Certification”. Generally, it takes anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months to complete the CNA training, depending on where one takes the course. Many hospitals offer CNA training programs and also induct the students into their facility after successful completion of the program. Some hospitals offer the training free of cost, but require students to work for a period of three to six months in their facility after completion of their training. Some community colleges also offer free or low cost CNA training programs.
The training consists of classroom sessions as well as clinical hands-on practice. Students will have to study physiology, anatomy, nursing fundamentals, diet and nutrition, the principles of controlling infection, and various other basic concepts related to the medical profession.
How to get CNA Certification Online
People who do not have the time or resources to attend a regular certification program can opt for a CNA certification online. However, only the theoretical portion of the curriculum can be taken online. Since the training involves hands-on practice as well, students would have to go through those sessions in a real medical facility. Any institution that claims to offer the entire CNA certification online will not have state board accreditation.
